Did you know that the part of the mushroom that we see above the ground is only a small part of the fungi?
A whole underground network called mycelium grows underground in the dirt. When the fungi is ready to spread spores, it produces mushrooms above ground.
Spores are then released by these structures. New fungi can form if the spores land in the right locations.
Fall is a great time to head out side for a mushroom hunt. You can spot them all year round, but fall is when many varieties can be spotted in the forest.
Your kids can color the large mushroom above then label the different parts. In this realistic coloring page you can spot the gills, cap, and stem.

Do you have a picture of a sponge mushroom ? I know there are others you can eat, but I’m not sure. I told my class about toad stools and the sponge mushroom, but I wanted to show them other ones that they could eat. Thanks!

This ID guide (https://amzn.to/3GZk6WB) is filled with real life images for you're kids to see. There are many dangerous/deadly look alikes so I always remind kids to look but not touch when they see ones in the wild. However, your local agricultural office may have some great info on edible mushrooms in your area. I've been out to observe mushrooms with a teacher who was a knowledgeable mushroom guide who led the event and its amazing how many you can find in a wooded area, usually in the fall. Mushrooms are tricky because some are so poisonous and actually deadly. Another great option is to check out a local farm stand (reputable) to see if they have any available for sale that they know are safe to eat.
