Fun Fact: There are more than 5,000 known species of dragonflies (source).
This includes both dragonflies and damselflies. These insects are similar, but have a few differences including the shape of their wings, size of their heads, and wing position when resting (source).
Did you know that you often find dragonflies around water sources including ponds and lakes because they actually live in the water for most of their lives?
That's right, dragonfly larva, also called nymphs live in the water and look pretty different than the winged dragonflies we see in the air.
These aquatic insects are carnivores just like adult dragonflies (source). If you have ever caught a few to keep for observations, than you may soon find a few missing.
